The record

At the eastern end of Long Island, Montauk Point Lighthouse was completed in 1796. The tower was enlarged in 1860, so its present shape includes later changes.

The print looks up from the rocky shore towards the white tower and its broad red band. Keeper buildings and low vegetation sit below it, with turquoise water along the point.

What this print shows

I kept the keeper buildings and the modern rectangular tower because the lighthouse does not stand alone in the real view. Their lower shapes make the white tower and dark lantern more decisive. The foreground rocks are enlarged into angular planes, while thin cream water edges prevent the coast from becoming a flat wall.
