The record
Piha has a place in New Zealand’s surf history: visiting American lifeguards brought lighter Californian Malibu boards there in 1958.
In the print, Lion Rock stands beside the long curve of the beach, with the headland behind it. Broad areas of sand, blue-green water and hillside keep the rock easy to recognise. The colours are part of the painting, rather than a record of conditions on a particular day.
What this print shows
The composition begins above the beach. The rock, the curve of the shore and the distant headland remain visible in one frame. Te Piha is reduced to mustard, olive and green planes; repeated surf bands preserve the long direction of the coast.
Golden foreground slopes anchor the lower edge, while a single cream cloud crosses an otherwise open blue sky. People and buildings are omitted so the geography carries the image.
