Australia & New Zealand
Australia and New Zealand hold more well-known surf breaks per stretch of coast than almost anywhere. This page gathers them as places rather than wave shots – Bondi's Pavilion, the timber posts at St Clair, the stony shore at Mangamaunu – painted so that anyone who has stood there recognises the view.
Eleven breaks across both countries, painted as places rather than wave shots: a pavilion, a lookout, a line of timber posts, a stony shore.
In Australia, Bells Beach is a managed surfing reserve on Victoria’s Surf Coast, on Wadawurrung Country; Bondi’s Pavilion opened in 1929 between Campbell Parade and the sand; Snapper Rocks and Noosa both lie within Queensland’s World Surfing Reserves; The Pass at Byron Bay belongs to the Walgun Cape Byron State Conservation Area; and Surfers Point sits on the managed Prevelly coast near the mouth of Western Australia’s Margaret River.
In New Zealand, the national coastal policy lists Manu Bay at Raglan among the surf breaks of national significance. Piha has a documented place in the country’s surf history, with its black sand and Lion Rock; St Clair’s timber posts are what remains of a groyne built to hold sand on Dunedin’s exposed coast; Mangamaunu faces the Pacific north of Kaikōura; and Back Beach in New Plymouth looks out at the rock forms of Ngā Motu.
Prints ship to Australia and New Zealand in centimetre sizes, framed or unframed, priced in US dollars.
