South America
Huanchaco was a fishing town first. The caballitos de totora – reed boats still launched from this beach – predate surfing here by centuries, and that context gets researched along with the wave, not left out of the poster.
Two breaks on Peru’s dry northern coast, painted around what makes each one legible from the shore.
Beside Puerto Malabrigo in La Libertad, Peru’s environment ministry describes Chicama as the first wave in the world protected by law, under a 2016 resolution registering the Rompiente de Chicama. Further south at Huanchaco, the national tourism inventory records the beach resort and the reed beds, the totorales, from which the caballitos de totora are made – the slender reed craft that stand upright on the beach in the print.
Neither print measures a wave. Chicama is a curve of ochre land and pale lines along the bay; Huanchaco is five reed craft and their shadows on the sand.
