The record

The present Cape Hatteras lighthouse dates from 1870 and was moved inland in 1999 as erosion threatened the site.

Its black-and-white spiral stripes make the tower easy to pick out above the dunes in the print. Ochre grass, low green scrub and yellow sand lead down to turquoise Atlantic water. The scene is an interpretation of the coast, not a survey of the tower’s distance from the sea.

What this print shows

I placed the spiral tower above the dune crest and let the sand fence draw the foreground toward it. The bands carry nearly all the architectural detail. Visitor buildings, signs and agency marks were left out. Water appears only at the lower edge, as color rather than a description of current surf.
