The record
Above Praia do Norte, Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo was begun in 1577 and expanded in 1644. The harbour light on the fort began operating in 1903.
The fort sits small against the water in the print. Its pale walls and red light contrast with broad turquoise and cream wave shapes. No particular ride or measured wave is depicted.
What this print shows
Cream and ochre masonry rises from the lower-right corner in interlocking blocks. The red cylinder at the roofline is the smallest, sharpest color in the entire composition.
Water occupies nearly everything else. Turquoise planes stack upward into oversized crests, but no measured wave or documented ride is reproduced. The scale is expressive, not statistical.
