Surf Haunts

Europe

Six European breaks that only make sense once you know exactly where they are: a fort above Nazaré's Praia do Norte, a village on a fajã on Madeira, a cliff-backed beach in Biarritz, a river wave in the middle of Munich, and two farmed valleys on Norway's coast – one of them inside the Arctic Circle, where the water is colder than the air.

Six European breaks, from the Atlantic coast of Portugal and France to a river in Munich and two valleys in Norway.

At Nazaré, construction of Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo began in 1577, and a harbour light has operated on the fort since 1903; Portugal’s Hydrographic Institute explains how the submarine canyon shapes the waves below it. On Madeira, Jardim do Mar is a compact parish on a coastal fajã in Calheta. In Biarritz, Côte des Basques is a long, cliff-backed beach whose exposed sand changes markedly with the tide.

The Eisbach is the odd one out: a standing wave on a narrow channel at the southern edge of Munich’s English Garden, hundreds of miles from the sea. In Norway, municipal studies document farms, field divisions and boathouses in the enclosed valley at Unstad in Lofoten, and Hoddevik on the Stad peninsula is both a surf destination and a working cultural landscape recorded in the municipality’s heritage plan.

The prints keep to what can be seen from the shore – fort, village, cliff, channel, valley – and are printed to order in centimetres or inches, framed or unframed. EU orders have a 14-day right of withdrawal.
